Ebook About
Today Show Book Club PickAn extraordinarily haunting love story told in the voice of a man who appears to age backwardsWe are each the love of someone's life.So begins The Confessions of Max Tivoli, a heartbreaking love story with a narrator like no other. At his birth, Max's father declares him a "nisse," a creature of Danish myth, as his baby son has the external physical appearance of an old, dying creature. Max grows older like any child, but his physical age appears to go backward--on the outside a very old man, but inside still a fearful child. The story is told in three acts. First, young Max falls in love with a neighborhood girl, Alice, who ages as normally as any of us. Max, of course, does not; as a young man, he has an older man's body. But his curse is also his blessing: as he gets older, his body grows younger, so each successive time he finds his Alice, she does not recognize him. She takes him for a stranger, and Max is given another chance at love.Set against the historical backdrop of San Francisco at the turn of the twentieth century, Max's life and confessions question the very nature of time, of appearance and reality, and of love itself. A beautiful and daring feat of the imagination, Andrew Sean Greer's The Confessions of Max Tivoli reveals the world through the eyes of a "monster," a being who confounds the very certainties by which we live and in doing so embodies in extremis what it means to be human.

Book The Confessions of Max Tivoli: A Novel Review :

We've seen the premise in a recent Brad Pitt movie about the life of a man who appears to age backwards. What does not appear in the reviews is that there is gruesome animal violence told from a voyeuristic viewpoint. The character is not an interesting individual, nor is the story told in an engaging manner. I made it to 41%, thinking every day when I picked it up, 'Now, what is this story about?' I don't think I have ever given a one-star review before, but this one is well deserved. The story is not memorable except when shock effect is employed, and that is a cheap writing trick.
I have read "Less", Mr. Greer's recent Pulitzer Prize winning novel of how the avoidance of love ensures it (and so much more). I have read "The Story Of a Marriage" , Mr. Greer's gorgeous rumination about the cost of love (and so much more). I have just finished "Max Tivoli" , or/and it just finished me, and, while it is too soon for me to get an intellectual sense of what the book is "about", it feels to be about loneliness. About belonging, or the strong probability that we never really do. Greer causes me to weep in such a singular, complicated way. His understanding and presentation of loneliness is explosive, and very painful for me. His explanations for love, for I do not believe that he experiences it as, or believes it to be, any one thing, leave me with questions both disturbing and satisfying. One of the things that makes Greer such a singular writer, is how deeply satisfying are his questions. And, how sometimes devastating are his answers. For a true writer is not one who merely raises questions, it is one who supplies, revealing his all-important Point Of View, definitive answers. Greer's prose is unrivalled among today's most accomplished (and acclaimed) literary wonders in that it is, simultaneously, information, description, poetry, not at all "economic" and both singular from and married to, not only the book that contains it, but any form of prose-writing that I have encountered before. His books, far too specific in every way, are far from excuses for him to wax at length about his numerous philosophical beliefs. And, yet wax he does. His prose can be as untethered as the silver balloon that rises so magnificently in "Tivoli". Not "flights of fancy", at all, as the specifics of each book; their time and place and form and character/characters and style are never abandoned or left behind, only to be returned to post-flight. But I believe that Mr. Greer, with each potentially limiting choice he makes as he moves closer to the actual mechanics of writing; the time period of the novel, the central event, the literal geography, it's primary character's purposes, desires, histories, their intellectual (and verbal) prowess and wisdom and self-awareness and style, creates for himself a landscape, a canvas within which his endlessly curious mind can, not wander, but explore. Mr. Greer also does not avoid being definitive. He constantly makes statements about the human condition that we are either to agree with, accept as fact, or prepare to have proven. I LOVE this! I WANT to know what a writer, or what a writer through a character, BELIEVES TO BE TRUE. What is astounding about Mr. Greer's writing is that it is through the specificity of his stories, the very singular and unusual events presented, his character's utter uniqueness (and his own unashamed use of the poetry inherent in all of our efforts to find both purpose and safe harbor) that he makes his case.Andrew Sean Greer is not only my new favorite writer (yawn), but his work exists as an important and essential new turning point in the future of literary fiction. He is amazing us, entertaining us, unsettling us and satisfying us, but, pay attention, he is teaching us.
